About Us:

Our History
Carlie C. McLamb and his wife Joyce opened their very first store in 1961. It was a small country store located in Johnston County, North Carolina. They knew the challenges that lay ahead of them, and knew it would be hard work, but then again neither one of them had ever been afraid of working hard for what they wanted. The opportunity arose for them to move their store to just outside of Dunn, North Carolina in 1962. They settled in and through dedication and working long hours, the business began to grow. They offered fresh quality meats; fair prices and a customer service policy that to this day brings customers back repeatedly. The business was growing and in 1965, they expanded this location. There would be two more expansions over the next 7 years at this location, each time upgrading and modernizing their equipment. It soon became a true family business with the addition of Carlie C’s brother to help in the Meat Department. In 1979, they were offered the opportunity to open a store in Coats, North Carolina. This store became their first IGA store and once again, family was called upon. This time M.T. Strickland, Joyce’s brother was asked to run the store, while Carlie C’s brother Jerry ran the Meat department. Again, business was growing and the store expanded in 1982. In 1983, they opened a store in the small mill town of Erwin, North Carolina. This was the only supermarket in town and so the business was a huge success.

In 1984, fire destroyed the original store. The business was uninsured, but Carlie C. and Joyce would not be deterred. Through the help of local businesses, loyal employees, friends, neighbors and family the store was re-opened a short time later as an IGA store. Now they had three stores under the IGA banner. Never one to turn down an opportunity, Carlie C. would purchase 2 more stores in Dunn, North Carolina making a total of five stores. He then closed down the original store making it his company headquarters and Meat Processing Plant. Carlie C. was quite well known in the community for his country hams, sausage, Bar-b-Que sauce and what he considers his “Green Gold” - collards.

In 1988, he made the decision to move outside the local community with the purchase of a store located in Spring Lake, North Carolina. This is a military community, which borders Fort Bragg, North Carolina. This store would be the largest store in their chain, and would prove to be a resounding success. Six months later, they opened a store in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Carlie C’s hometown philosophy, quality meats, and friendly service again made this store a wonderful success. The growth would continue with the remodeling of the other stores and continued additions of six other stores located in Benson, Lillington, Angier, and Fayetteville, North Carolina. Today, Carlie C’s has 12 stores located in Harnett County, Johnston County, and Cumberland County. The Meat Processing Plant is still located in Dunn and produces what is considered some of the “best sausage” anywhere. They also package collards, known to his employees as "Green Gold”. Full-scale packaged collard production went into effect in 2003, and has proved to be wildly successful. Just ask anyone who “used” to cook collards at home, and they will tell you that the convenience of having a packaged product is much better.

He is also very active in the community each year sponsoring numerous church and school fundraisers. He is an active member of the Lion’s Club and has been a loyal member of Leslie Methodist Church for years. His family also has a very active role in this business, with his son Mack as President and his daughter Carla as Comptroller. Carlie C. still has the most active role, being that of “Daddy” and Mr. Carlie C., as his employees and customers alike affectionately know him.
